Lumphini Park

Central Bangkok's most famous park achieves dual fame: water monitor lizards lounging by lagoons and legitimate bird diversity spanning forest canopy species and water birds.

The water monitors are guaranteed sightings—several lagoons each host 3-4 giant lizards easily visible from paths. Little Egrets maintain active nesting colonies with visible young in nests. The mix of woodland and wetland species means birders can see forest birds and water birds in single visit.

Lumphini Park’s public pool (6‑lane, 25‑meter outdoor) requires an annual membership fee of about 40 THB and either a Thai ID or passport plus a medical certificate. It operates roughly 7:00 AM–7:15 PM. Paddle boats, walking paths, and outdoor gym equipment serve non‑birding visitors.

Monika's Tip

The monitor lizards are most active 7-9 AM when they emerge from overnight shelter to bask in morning sun. By noon they're hiding in shade or submerged in water avoiding heat. Early morning delivers best lizard viewing and peak bird activity simultaneously.
