Kanchanaburi War Cemetery

Kanchanaburi War Cemetery
Beautifully maintained Allied war cemetery containing 6,982 graves of POWs who died during railway construction.
The perfection is intentional—honoring the dead through meticulous care. Reading the headstones reveals how young they were, how far from home, how many died on the same dates during particularly brutal construction periods.
It's free, quiet, and powerfully moving. Budget 30 minutes of respectful silence among the graves.
What guides add: Historical context about specific burial sections, explaining headstone symbolism, understanding why certain dates show multiple deaths.

Monika's Tip
Early morning (7-8 AM) the groundskeepers are watering and maintaining graves. Watching them care for the cemetery with such dedication adds another layer of meaning—these deaths still matter enough for daily care 80 years later.
