MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum

Chiang Mai's premier contemporary art museum — striking converted warehouse with rotating Thai and international exhibitions and a sculpture garden.

Chiang Mai's most significant contemporary art museum, housed in a striking space 20 minutes east of the Old City. The permanent collection focuses on Thai and Southeast Asian contemporary art from the 1960s to present, while ambitious rotating exhibitions draw international artists.

The building itself — a renovated industrial warehouse — is worth visiting for its architecture alone. The outdoor sculpture garden provides a shaded, open-air extension of the collection.

What to Expect Rotating exhibitions every 2-3 months mean repeat visits reveal entirely different shows. The curators focus on conceptual and politically engaged work uncommon in Thai commercial galleries. Well-labeled in English. The museum shop carries quality prints, artist-designed objects, and books on Thai art history.

When to Go Tuesday–Sunday, 10 AM–6 PM. Pair with a visit to nearby San Kamphaeng handicraft village — both are on the same road east of the city.
