Wat Chedi Luang

Wat Chedi Luang
Partially ruined 600-year-old chedi dominates the Old City skyline at 60 meters tall (originally 82 meters before earthquake damage).
The ruins are stabilized but not reconstructed, which preserves authentic character rather than creating Disneyland version. Scaffolding and preservation work happen constantly, reminding visitors these are active conservation projects.
Evening monk chats (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays 5-6 PM) let tourists ask monks questions about Buddhism and Thai life. It's educational tourism done thoughtfully, giving monks English practice while teaching visitors.
What guides offer: Understanding earthquake history, explaining preservation philosophy (stabilize versus reconstruct), answering questions monk chats don't cover.

Monika's Tip
The City Pillar Shrine (Sao Inthakin) sits in a small building on the temple grounds—most tourists walk right past it. It's the spiritual center of Chiang Mai, contains the city's protective pillar, and sees constant local worship while tourists ignore it completely.
