San Kamphaeng Handicraft Village

The 'Handicraft Highway' — 13km stretch of direct-from-maker workshops for silk, silverwork, woodcarving, lacquerware, and celadon pottery 13km from Chiang Mai.

A 13-kilometer stretch of road east of Chiang Mai (Route 1006) lined with workshops, factories, and showrooms producing Thailand's finest traditional crafts. Unlike tourist-facing shops in the city, San Kamphaeng sells directly from the makers — better quality and better prices.

What's Here Silk weaving studios where you can watch weavers working at traditional looms. Silverwork shops with intricate repoussé work. Woodcarving galleries with everything from small decorative pieces to full furniture. Lacquerware workshops demonstrating the multi-layer application process. Celadon pottery (the jade-green ceramic style) direct from kilns.

How to Explore Self-guided along Route 1006 — stop wherever catches your eye. The farthest workshops (15+ km out) are often the least tourist-polished and most authentic. Combine with Bo Sang Umbrella Village (on the same road, 9 km from city) for a half-day handicraft trip.

Buying Tips Prices are negotiable but start lower than Old City shops. Silk especially is significantly cheaper buying direct. Reputable workshops will arrange international shipping for large purchases — worth asking, as most do.
