Wat Suan Dok

Wat Suan Dok
'Flower Garden Temple' with 14th-century viharn and a garden of gleaming white chedis housing the Chiang Mai royal family ashes.
One of Chiang Mai's most photogenic temples — a vast compound filled with gleaming white chedis housing the ashes of the Chiang Mai royal family. The 14th-century main viharn shelters a large bronze gilded Buddha, while the garden of white chedis creates a beautiful, meditative scene.
Unlike the busy Old City temples, Wat Suan Dok has fewer tourists and a more spacious, peaceful atmosphere. The grounds are open for quiet wandering without ticketing queues.
Monk Chat Program Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings (5:30–7:30 PM), novice monks host informal conversational gatherings for visitors — an opportunity to ask genuine questions about Buddhism, temple life, and Thai culture. One of the best authentic cultural exchanges available in Chiang Mai at no cost.
Photography The white chedis photographed against Doi Suthep mountain backdrop make for excellent shots. Arrive late afternoon for both good light and comfortable temperatures.
