He came to Bangkok in 1945, rebuilt the Thai silk industry, and vanished in 1967. The house he left behind is extraordinary.
Jim Thompson was an American intelligence officer who came to Bangkok at the end of WWII, never left, and single-handedly revived the Thai silk industry. His house — six traditional Thai teak houses joined together, filled with Asian antiques — is one of the most interesting interiors in the city. This tour visits the house, then moves through the surrounding streets where the weavers he worked with first set up their looms. The story of his disappearance in 1967, which was never solved, is part of the visit.

Your guide meets you in the lobby and you travel together in a private, air-conditioned vehicle.
Walk through the six joined teak houses and the antique collection inside. Monika covers the history of the building, the objects, and the man — including the circumstances of his disappearance, which remains one of Thailand's most talked-about mysteries.
The canal-side neighbourhood where Thompson found his weavers. Some families here have been weaving for generations. Monika explains the connection between this community and the industry Thompson built around them.
A drive through the surrounding neighbourhood — the old market buildings, textile shops and streets that haven't changed much in decades.

“Born in Chiang Mai and based in Bangkok, I started 'Hi Monika' to show travellers the authentic side of my country — the places my friends and family actually hang out. I love sharing our food, our culture, and the hidden stories of our neighbourhoods.”
“Monika was incredible! We saw parts of Bangkok we never would have found on our own. The street food was amazing and we felt completely safe the entire time.”
“Perfectly organised and so much more personal than a group tour. Monika knew exactly when to go to each spot to avoid the crowds.”
Note: many local vendors and restaurants do not accept credit cards — cash is always the safest option.

The Emerald Buddha isn't emerald. The Reclining Buddha maps the cosmos. There's more here than most visitors ever find out.

A Buddha hidden for centuries. A tower built from donated porcelain. Three temples with stories most visitors walk past.

Bangkok's original roads are canals. Most of the city has forgotten. This tour remembers.
