Wat Mahathat

Famous for Buddha head entwined in tree roots.

The most iconic image of Ayutthaya lives here, a stone Buddha head serenely entwined in the roots of a bodhi tree, the result of centuries of roots slowly embracing the carved face. The ruined complex spreads across a wide site with a central prang and dozens of smaller chedis in various states of collapse, creating a dramatic landscape that rewards slow, unhurried exploration.

Remember to kneel or lower your camera below the Buddha's eye level when photographing the tree-root head. Despite the tourist foot traffic, this is still a functioning sacred site, and the respectful gesture costs nothing.
