The Elephant Building

Thirty-two stories shaped like a cartoon elephant dominates the Chatuchak skyline, complete with trunk, legs, ears, and tusks rendered in concrete and glass because architect Sumet Jumsai apparently decided conventional towers were boring and Bangkok needed more whimsy.

CNN listed it among the world's ugliest skyscrapers in 2011, which only increased its fame. The building functions as normal office and residential space—people actually live and work inside the elephant—but from outside it's this absurd landmark visible across north Bangkok creating unmistakable silhouette against sky.

The photography works best from distance where the full elephant form reads clearly. Up close you're just shooting a regular building with curved balconies. The architectural oddity is the concept, not the detail work.

Monika's Tip

Shoot from Chatuchak Park's northeast corner during late afternoon when sun lights the building from the side. The shadow-and-light contrast makes the elephant form way more obvious than midday flat lighting where it just looks like weird architecture.
